Back to Iona Cottage

We went up to open up our cottage in northern Vermont this weekend. Everything seems to have survived the long snowy winter quite well. We got in the row boat, along with our dog Merci, and dragged the hose out into the water. What a job that was. First, Gary rowed and I dragged the hose, which kept getting tangled up in the oar. Then I rowed, and he dragged the hose. We finally got it out far enough. We then started up the pump but still didn't have water when we left for church and dinner.
There was a new priest at our church, who was from Puerto Rico. We both had difficulty understanding his homily. We then drove over to Claire's for a lovely dinner. We had battered vegetables (carrots, parsnips and fiddleheads ) served with aoli, which was delicious. I opted for the pork which had a maple glaze and was served with mashed potatoes topped with roasted parsnips and pok choy and some kind of an appple cranberry thing. It was wonderful. Gary had the brisket, which he said was also delicious. Claire's serves all local food, most grown within a 15 mile radius of the restaurant. Service is great, food delicious and nice atmosphere - all in northern Vermont.
Although I brought my little Janome with me, I did not get any time to sew. I did however, peruse the new Quilt Sampler magazine which I'd brought me. I love the quilts that are featured in this issue. The beautiful dreamer quilt would look great in our bedroom, so I couldn't resist ordering the kit when we got back home. The color combination will work well with our new beige walls.
Gary spent more time when we got back to the cottage last night attempting to get the pump working. It appears to be working, but we still don't have water in the house.
It had started raining in the afternoon and was pouring by this morning. There seemed little reason to stay up there in the rain so we packed up our things and headed back down the mountain. Did I mention how muddy several sections of the road were? Well, we made it through the first muddy section, but ended up stuck in the second one - really good and stuck!
Gary grabbed the umbrella and headed off to find someone to pull us out. He did find someone in the second place he went to, and he had a big truck. After sometime, he was able to hook onto the back of our car and slowly but surely pull us out. Merci got so frightened when he started pulling on us that she jumped right into the front seat!
They are predicting another week of rain, so I'm not sure we'll get back up there this coming weekend. I can only imagine what another week of rain will do to those back roads.
Gary and Merci are both napping and I'm debating on whether to watch a movie or head out and sew...
